Night satellite photos of the US taken by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) satellite were widely circulated last month. In addition to providing a truly astounding night time image of the globe (including a very dark North Korea), they also show that the huge amount of gas flaring in some of the Unconventional basin areas is now visible from space.

A “before and after” shot, from 2003 and 2002 highlights the rapid pace of development.

Flaring from both the Bakken and Eagle Ford shale plays are clearly visible in these images.

A zoomed image of the Eagle Ford shale play image appears to illustrate that the Unconventional oil wells are flaring their gas & selling their oil. The gas wells are either shut in, declined, or are simply selling their gas.
